Martin Mukarutabana spent 20 weeks after a liver transplant in two Intensive Care Units. She developed multiple organ fail- ure soon after transplantation and underwent numerous interventions. Her rights and autonomy became “illusionary”, her partner was ignored. Finally treatment was stopped. Discussion of generally agreed goals, not technical options, before and during the admission, could have prevented futile intensive care treatment for 20 weeks.
